Bombora’s March 2025 taxonomy release exceeds 17,000+ topics

As the Intent data pioneer, Bombora leads the way in understanding B2B Intent as reflected in businesses’ digital research and content consumption. Our models actively monitor when businesses interact with B2B topics – for example, when a major retailer searches for “HR systems” or a bank searches for “cybersecurity.” A vast array of B2B topics are organized within the Bombora taxonomy, which is at the core of our Intent data solutions.

Bombora is continuously updating its topic taxonomy to reflect the changing realities of the business world. Today Bombora released its newest taxonomy, which is now live for use in our Company Surge® solution. In this release, more than 500 new Intent topics were added, bringing the total number of topics to a record high of 17,210.

But what makes Bombora’s topic taxonomy so special? The Bombora taxonomy goes far beyond simple keywords. Our natural language processing (NLP) models understand the context around the topic rather than just identifying the word itself. This ensures that the identified topics are genuinely related to real B2B interests and solves the problem of deriving Intent from homonyms like “apple” (the fruit) and “Apple” (the company).

Bombora’s topic taxonomy constantly evolves, allowing us to capture relevant research activity across various verticals, industries, and geographies. Our models also go beyond singular topic identification to detect relationships between topics and curate sets of topics that represent holistic buying behavior.

How do customers benefit from the Bombora taxonomy?

When Company Surge customers are onboarded, Bombora works with their teams to select topics to monitor. These topics might relate to the industry that they’re in, the problems their business solves, their brand names, solution names, competitor names, and more. The customer will then be alerted to Company Surge activity against those topics – indicating which businesses are “spiking,” or actively researching, indicating they may be ripe for targeting.

Bombora’s Company Surge Intent data is derived from our exclusive Data Cooperative. The Data Co-op monitors billions of events from influential B2B publishers, brand websites, and premium data providers. 86% of the data in our Co-op is shared exclusively with Bombora for the purposes of deriving Intent – no other Intent data provider has access to these signals. This gives us the unique ability to capture Intent signals across industries, verticals, and stages of the buyer journey.

Bombora taxonomy additions

Where do taxonomy additions come from? Our NLP models are constantly classifying topics, and we keep an eye on ones that are relevant to our customers. If we see a lot of activity against those topics, we automatically add those. New company and product names are also added on a regular basis.

In addition, Bombora customers can request that new topics be added to the taxonomy – these will be subject to our thorough vetting process. New topics undergo a rigorous quality assurance process before being approved. For example, it’s important to determine if there’s enough activity against the suggested topic to train our models on it. If a topic suggestion is too obscure and rarely used, it won’t be useful to our customers and it won’t make it into the taxonomy.
