What is intent data?

Intent data reveals when buyers (accounts and buying-group members) are actively researching topics across the internet, based on the content they consume. Topics can include products, solutions, competitors and more.  GTM leaders (marketing, sales, data scientists) use intent data to prioritize in-market opportunities, identify prospects that are ready to buy, and align their messaging to what buyers actually need.

What are the primary categories of intent data, and where does it come from?

There are many different types of intent data derived from a variety of sources. Typically intent data is grouped into two types: first-party intent data and third-party intent data. The type of intent data used depends on the user’s goals and use cases. Many companies use a mix of first-party and third-party intent data.

What is first-party intent data?

First-party intent data is data signals collected from prospects and customers engaging with a company’s owned or paid experiences.

Types of first-party intent data:

  • Website engagement: website traffic and specific content consumption patterns.
  • Paid and organic reach: engagement across digital advertising and social media channels.
  • Direct subscriptions: interactions with newsletters and specialized industry content.
  • Event participation: registration and engagement data from online and offline events.
  • Direct and conversational insights: signals from sales and support dialogues, inquiry forms, and direct feedback.
  • Solution engagement and trial milestones: data from product demonstrations, trials, and solution or feature usage.

What is third-party intent data?

Third-party intent data is purchased or licensed data signals collected from outside a company’s owned and paid experiences. Third-party intent expands a company’s visibility, revealing the research behavior of accounts and buying groups before they engage directly with their brand.

Types of third-party intent data:

  • Data Cooperative: traffic, engagement, and content consumption signals unified from a group of publishers, brands, websites and apps to create a comprehensive view of a research journey.
  • Publisher direct: traffic and engagement data collected from a specific publisher or set of sites focused on a niche audience or subject area to provide deep, but specialized, topical intelligence.
  • Bidstream: fragmented, surface-level data passed from a publisher’s site during the real-time bidding process. It provides only a momentary glimpse of visitor activity and lacks the durable, unified, and longitudinal view of other types of intent data.
